New manifesto by BIVDA in the UK: Adoption of IVDs needs to be increased

The British In Vitro Diagnostics Association (BIVDA) has published its 2017 General Election Manifesto to urge the next Government to prioritize the adoption of in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) further. BIVDA pointed out that IVDs are crucial for NHS (National Health Service) since about 70% of the clinical decisions are made based on the IVD test. However, the adoption of IVDs is still too slow due to challenges in budget, flexibility and understanding. Better adoption of IVDs would improve the patient outcomes, diagnosis and treatment which in part would increase the efficacy and savings for NHS and strengthen the UK economy.

In the Manifesto BIVDA pointed out five key policy areas. First, securing a more effective and efficient NHS by increasing the adoption of IVDs so that every patient could have right IVDs at the right time. Second, securing a new mechanism for the funding of IVDs in order to enable the increase of the IVDs adoption and patient access to diagnostics. Third, guaranteeing patient access to molecular diagnostics so that possibilities of personalized medicine could be utilized properly. Fourth, playing a leading role in overcoming global health challenges, such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR). With appropriate diagnostics, the usage of antibiotics and the urgent threat of AMR can be decreased. Fifth, establishing a new relationship with EU so that  UK could stay attractive and open for IVDs business.
