New Cochrane review identifies point of care CRP testing to cut antibiotic prescribing in primary care

A new Cochrane review has identified three effective and safe clinician-focused interventions to reduce antibiotic prescribing for acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in primary care. The authors found that point-of-care CRP testing, procalcitonin-guided management and shared decision making probably safely reduce antibiotic prescribing in the management of ARIs compared to usual care.

ARIs include conditions such as bronchitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and acute otitis media are considered a significant driver of antibiotic use in primary care settings and consequently a major factor in antibiotic resistance.
